SPOT Tracking for Gliding Grand Prix
UPDATE - 20 Nov 2008
As planning continues for the Australian Qualifying Grand Prix the local organisers are working to set up a simple tracking system for the long term benefit of all gliding pilots in Australia.
The spot tracking will be interfaced with a program written especially for use to be trialled during the Grand Prix. The organisers are grateful to the Gliding Federation of Australia, Gliding club of Victoria, Scott Penrose and John Wharington for their very kind support and hours of tireless work to put this program in place for the Narromine event.
The tracking of sailplane races adds an exciting new dimension to the sport of soaring and allows for participation of aviation enthusiasts to follow the sailplanes as they race around the set course. It is intended that short races of up to 3 hours will be flown each day and the aircraft can be viewed with a google earth background to show the track flown.
It is planned that the auditorium at the airport will be set up as a theatre to display the tracking and the aero club will supply all meals and operate their bar throughout the week long event.

Press Release – Australian Qualifying Gliding Grand Prix
- 17th November 2008
International and national glider pilots are gathering at Narromine, Central New South Wales for the Australian qualifying Grand Prix glider racing week. The organisers are delighted with the high standard of entry with the present world open class champion Michael Sommer from Germany and a previous Australian 15 metre racing world champion Brad Edwards along with national champions from Italy, Japan and Australia.
The first competition day will be the 30th November. The elegant white sailplanes will race around a 3 hour task at speed of up to 170kph. GPS tracking systems fitted to the aircraft will transmit position reports by satellite to a theatre screening at the airport. Enthusiasts will be able to sit in air-conditioned comfort and watch these sailplanes race around the course of 300 to 500 kilometres each day.
This event is one of 6 qualifying events held throughout the world. The two best placed entrants will then be eligible for the World Grand Prix to be held in Italy in 2009. The Narromine event is limited to 20 entrants and the competition will be fiercely contested.
Members of the public and all aviation enthusiasts are invited to attend the event at Narromine Airport from 30th November to 6th December.
